Gluing & Sub-patch |
|
This is the most critical part of any leather repair. The key is getting good adhesion. In an area where it is difficult to hold the patch together, you can use a hair drier to make the glue tacky and then hold the leather repair together until it bonds. Also, a piece of tape will help to hold the area together. For cuts, you only need a small amount of glue in the crack. Then using a hair drier, make the glue tacky and press together. For larger areas (holes, rips, tears and burns) a sub-patch is necessary. The key is getting the sub-patch in place and getting a good glue line around the under edge of the material where it will bond together. Sometimes you will need to add some padding under the sub-patch. |
Leather Cuts |
|
Aniline & Pigmented once the glue has dried, if there are slightly visible lines, using Leather Protector will soften the topcoat and help hide the leather repair. If the line is still noticeable, apply a light coat of color along the cut line. For rough areas, use a 50-50 mix of filler and color over the area.
Nubuck - once the glue has dried, use the Nubuck Cloth to roughen up the surface. |
Leather Scrapes & Scuffs |
|
For Aniline leather, use a hair drier to heat the area while massaging it. This will bring the leather scuff out. Then apply Leather Protectant over the area. If it is still noticeable then treat it like a leather repair.
For Nubuck leather use the Nubuck Cloth to blend in as best as possible. If the scrape is still visible then treat it like a leather repair.
For Pigmented leather, minor scrapes can be removed with leather protectant. Medium and large scrapes will require filler and color to blend in. |
Burns, Rips & Tears |
|
Prep the area by scraping off any burned edges and cutting off any rough /frayed particles. Install a sub-patch if necessary and use the filler to level in the hole. We recommend several light coats of filler dried between coats. You can use a hair dryer to assist in drying. Remember to hold hair dry at a 300 angle. After the leather repair is level, you can apply the color to the area. |
Color Loss/ Wear |
|
Leather colors fade over time and lose their luster. Leather Protectant will help restore the sheen to aniline and pigmented leather. If the leather has not been properly maintained or has had heavy usage, the color coating will have to be restored. |
